Your Complete Guide to Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island

Anna Maria Island is your perfect Florida getaway, where you can experience all the excitement of the Sunshine State without the tourist crowds and hustle and bustle. Come experience the gorgeous blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the fresh seafood at every restaurant, and the rich history of the island. You can mingle with the locals and stroll along the boulevards to truly escape and relax on your dream vacation.

The island is split up into three distinct cities: the City of Anna Maria, Bradenton Beach, and Holmes Beach. In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about Holmes Beach, from the best attractions to restaurants and our most popular Holmes Beach vacation rentals.

About Holmes Beach

Holmes Beach is located right in the middle of Anna Maria Island, with the City of Anna Maria to the north and Bradenton Beach to the south. Holmes Beach was first homesteaded in 1896 by Sam and Anna Cobb. However, the area did not receive its current name until after World War II when a developer by the name of Holmes arrived and created the 600-acre community that we call Holmes Beach today.

While the history of Holmes Beach may be rather short, you’ll find plenty of personality along the streets. This city has 5,000 residents, both permanent and seasonal, making it the largest community on Anna Maria Island. You can explore the three miles of sandy beaches and easily get to any attraction you may desire.

Activities and Things to Do

Holmes Beach provides something for every interest, so your whole family will find something to enjoy. Of course, you have to visit the beach, and Manatee Public Beach is the most popular spot. You’ll find a playground for your kids to enjoy, picnic tables and grills to have lunch on the shore, and restrooms and showers that can accommodate all visitors. You can also take advantage of the various water sports throughout the area, whether you want to parasail high above the waves or sail right through them in a boat or jet-ski!

There are also plenty of cultural experiences to enjoy in Holmes Beach. Be sure to stop by Island Gallery West or Bob Brown Art for a taste of the local art scene, and you can chat with the artisans to get a true taste of the AMI culture. Holmes Beach is also the perfect spot for shopping, as there are plenty of shops and boutiques that feature everything from jewelry to souvenirs to home decor and more. Just a few of the most popular shopping spots include Westcoast Surf Shop, Sun & Surf Beach Shop, Creations by L, and Restless Natives.

Of course, if you somehow run out of things to do in Holmes Beach, you’re just moments away from plenty of other attractions. Anna Maria Island is only seven miles long, and you can easily reach any of the three cities thanks to the free island trolley. There are plenty of trolley stops throughout the city of Holmes Beach as well as nearby our Holmes Beach rentals, so you can hop on board anytime you please!

Places to Eat

In between all of the incredible activities, you’re bound to get hungry! Luckily, there are countless mouthwatering restaurants in Holmes Beach for any meal of the day and any palette. In the morning, head to Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe for the all you can eat pancakes and sausage, or sample the omelet, biscuits, and gravy, or breakfast sandwiches. For lunch or dinner, stop by to check out the classic cheeseburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, or seafood platters including shrimp, clam strips, or fresh fish caught right off the shoreline.

If you need your morning joe or just want a pick-me-up in the middle of the afternoon, visit Island Coffee Haus. Their selection of coffee features blends from Colombia, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, or you can sample the local tea. They also offer a wide selection of smoothies, juices, and more if you’re not in the mood for caffeine. Grab a granola bar or pastry to go with your drink, and browse the signs, mugs, glassware, and other artwork produced by Anna Maria Island artists. Island coffee Haus is a great place to stop and mingle with the locals or simply sip your coffee and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Looking for something more upscale? Beach Bistro is an award-winning surfside dining experience right on the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll have a stunning view of the water from anywhere in the restaurant, and you’ll get to experience fresh seafood taken to new heights through unique preparations. Come sample starters like their “lobstercargot” or foie gras, then move on to countries like the rack of domestic lamb, Bistro duckling two ways, or Bourbon and maple grilled Gulf Shrimp. End the evening with a desert-like the Florida key lime pie or a specialty coffee like the Irish Cream.

To finish off your evening, you have to visit Holy Cow Ice Cream. For more than six years, Holy Cow has been serving the locals and visitors to Holmes Beach with over 36 flavors to choose from. Sugar-free, dairy-free, and frozen yogurt offerings are available, so everyone can indulge in a sweet treat on a hot day. Pick a classic flavor like vanilla or butter pecan, or go wild with Kappa Kahlua, Superman, or triple chocolate!
