How Far Is It?
The distance from Fort Lauderdale to Anna Maria Island is approximately 188 miles. Driving by car along I-75 is the most convenient route and comes in at about 238 miles.
Driving Directions
The easiest way to drive from Fort Lauderdale to Anna Maria Island is by taking I-75 N. Start on I-595 W and follow the road until you can merge onto I-75 N. Keep in mind that there are tolls along this road, so be prepared with the proper fare. You’ll get off at exit 220A for FL-64 E toward Wauchula/Zolfo Springs, then keep left at the fork toward FL-64 W. Finally, follow this highway for 15 miles until you reach the island! If you drive without stopping, the journey should take about 3.5 hours.
All the Ways to Travel
If you’d rather not drive, there are several other ways you can get from Fort Lauderdale to Anna Maria Island. The most budget-friendly option is by bus, at $20-$40 per ticket, but we know that might not be the best option for a family vacation to Anna Maria. This low price point affords you a great view of Florida as you travel, but this is also one of the longest options at about 7 hours of travel time.
You’re also able to take an Amtrak train from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa, where you will then transfer to the bus system to take you the rest of the way. This journey typically takes about 7 hours as well, but it gives you a chance to enjoy Tampa for a bit during your transfer.
Finally, you have the option of flying into Tampa, which is the closest airport to Anna Maria. Take the trip from Fort Lauderdale into Miami or West Palm Beach, both 45-minute drives. You can fly from either airport into Tampa, then rent a car for the hour-long ride into AMI.
